Paxil’s Medical Use
Paxil is manufactured by SmithKline Beecham, and its primary use was as an antidepressant. It was seen to be a member of the same drug “family” as Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox and Celexa, all of which are considered “SSRI’s,” which stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. However, Paxil was also seen as unique from these other medications because its chemical composition was different and could be taken in pill form without accompanying food.
Problems Arise
Paxil soon began to be linked to several serious medical conditions, but the most significant, according to the FDA, arose when Paxil and other SSRI’s were taken in combination with migraine headache medication, which are known as triptans. According to the FDA’s Web site, symptoms that result from the combination of these drugs included:
- birth defects
- restlessness
- hallucinations
- loss of coordination
- fast heart beat
- increased body temperature
- fast changes in blood pressure
- overactive reflexes
- diarrhea
- coma
- nausea
- vomiting
As you see, Paxil can be a dangerous drug for more than one reason, and it’s also been found to be potentially addictive. If you have been injured as a result of using Paxil, contact the Paxil attorneys at Williams Kherkher for a free initial consultation.
